BUFFALO, N.Y.- NFTA-Metro is embarking on a comprehensive service improvement plan that when complete, will result in a modern, robust and sustainable transit system, designed to reflect the need and priorities of the Western New York community in the near future.

NFTA has already conducted several months of community engagement in order to understand rider and community needs and priorities. This effort began with a survey in May and June where over 600 people weighed in to tell us about their needs and priorities. In July, NFTA shared a variety of routes alternatives and options and received feedback from the public about which options they preferred. After considering all of this input, NFTA has developed a series of route change proposals, and we are now seeking a final round of input.

Riders and community members can view detailed proposals at metro.nfta.com/2021 network and provide comments right on the map. In addition, you can email us at planning@nfta.com, call Customer Care to provide a statement at (716) 855-7211, or write us a letter at Service Planning, 181 Ellicott St, Buffalo NY 14203.

There will be a total of three hearings, one virtual, and two in person, both Niagara and Erie Counties. The virtual meetings will take place on Monday, August 23, the second at the Portage Road Transportation Center in Niagara Falls (1162 Portage Road), and finally on Wednesday, August 25 at the Metropolitan Transportation Center (181 Ellicott) in downtown Buffalo. All hearings will take place at 5:30 p.m.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo Niagara International Airport’s elite Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting team is preparing to hold an exam for candidates. ARFF responds to aircraft incidents, structural fires, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, rescues, and emergency medical requests. The exam is used to find qualified candidates. Successful applicants will attend the fire academy. The written exam dates are below. Physical agility test will follow on separate date. An application fee $25 is required, made payable to the NFTA.

(Niagara Falls, N.Y.) — Western New York artist Jalen Law will reveal his completed mural inside the waiting area of the NFTA-Metro Portage Road Transportation Center at a media conference hosted by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA-Metro) and the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA). The conference will be held on July 28 at 1:30 p.m. at the Transportation Center located at 1162 Portage Road, Niagara Falls, New York. 

Law’s intentions for the mural included creating a piece of artwork that would resonate with all of the different people of the Niagara Falls community and empower them to make their voices heard. The incredible artwork that fills the space with beauty, color, and visual interest includes an interactive element — a QR code that viewers can scan to provide feedback. 

At the press conference, Law will be joined by several community leaders who will share more information about the project and reveal the finalized artwork.

BUFFALO, N.Y., - This morning, leaders from the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) were joined by government, business, and civic partners to officially cut the ribbon and unveil the Buffalo Niagara International Airport’s (BNIA) terminal enhancements. This event has even more significance this year, as Western New York looks forward, following a difficult year as a result of COVID-19. Today’s event provided an opportunity to celebrate the upgrades to our beloved airport. The $71.7 million dollar project boasts the following:

• 75,000 square feet of new and renovated space on the first and second floors of the passenger terminals.
• Improved critical traveler issues including security, pedestrian flow, curbside congestion, and baggage claim capacity.
• Will help lead the way for the region’s economic recovery.

Kimberly A. Minkel, NFTA Executive Director said, “This is an exciting day for the Buffalo Airport and our community, as the improvements will help us provide best in class aviation and continue to serve those traveling to and from Western New York. Our airport is now well positioned to play a critical role in our community’s post-pandemic economic recovery.”

When travelling returns to pre-COVID levels, BNIA will continue to generate 1 billion dollars into the region’s economy annually. Many BNIA travelers are Canadian tourists who bring outside spending to the region, especially at local hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments.

This outside spending helps stimulate the local economy, create local jobs, and generate additional tax revenue for the region and state. The airport revenue generated from increased airport activity will foster a more sustainable financial future for the airport as well as the NFTA, which also operates the Buffalo region’s public transit system.

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced its seasonal launch of Metro’s Trolley Service to guests staying at participating Niagara Falls hotels and motels beginning Friday, May 28.   Metro’s Niagara Falls Trolley buses will serve Niagara Falls Boulevard, Pine Avenue, the Niagara Falls International Airport and downtown Niagara Falls, USA.

Special Trolley stop signs along the route indicate where riders can board a Metro trolley.  

In downtown Niagara Falls, stops include the Aquarium of Niagara Falls, the Seneca Niagara Casino, and across from the Niagara Falls USA Official Visitor Center at First and Rainbow.  Service will also be provided to hotels and shops along Third Street, Rainbow Blvd. and Buffalo Avenue. In addition, stops are located along Pine Avenue, at the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, several motels along Niagara Falls Boulevard and Little Italy. 

Patrons receive their free 2021 trolley day passes upon request at participating hotels and motels.  The trolley pass, supported by the local Niagara Falls bed tax, allows pass holders free access to the trolley service and the entire Metro Bus and Rail system in Niagara and Erie Counties.  Passes must be validated in Niagara County and may be used anytime on the date the pass is punched by the Metro operator.

Those without a trolley day pass can ride the trolley by paying Metro's regular adult fare of $2, $1 for children (5-11 yrs.), seniors (65 yrs. and over), disabled and Medicare clients with valid I.D. All other Metro passes are also valid.  Children four and younger ride free, limit three children per fare paying adult.

What: The Niagara Falls International Airport is holding a disaster training exercise. The drill is held every three years to assess the capabilities of the airport, and its ability to work directly with other emergency services and the 914th Air Refueling Wing.

All communication coming out of the local emergency services will identify training activities as a drill.

When: Friday, May 28, 2021. The exercise will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to last until noon.

Jalen Law Selected to Create Mural Inside NFTA-Metro Portage Road Transportation Center

(Niagara Falls, NY) — The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA-Metro) and the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) have selected Jalen Law, a local, professional artist, to create a new mural inside the Portage Road Transportation Center. Based on his portfolio and prior engagement in the Niagara Falls community, Law was selected from a group of artists who responded to NFTA-Metro and NFNHA’s call for artists at the end of 2020.

NFTA-Metro and NFNHA will be hosting a press conference on Monday, May 17, when Jalen will begin putting the mural onto the wall of the Transportation Center.

Initially, the intent for the mural was to improve the appearance of the Center’s indoor waiting area, generating feelings of comfort, safety, and pride. But with Law onboard, the project has evolved to truly connect with the residents of Niagara Falls, empowering them to have their voices heard through an interactive element that allows the public to provide feedback.

“I hope that this newest piece can ultimately be a vehicle for discussion,” he said. “Art has an amazing capability to spark conversations that can eventually lead to positive change. I’m intending to make a piece that is authentic, honest, and can truly speak to all different types of people.”

Ultimately, the mural will be a way for the community to express itself. Saladin Allah, project coordinator for the NF Murals project, has been working alongside Law in making sure the piece is meaningful and impactful for the city.

“The NF Murals project has been all about portraying the city’s people and history and celebrating the vibrancy of our community,” said Allah. “This mural is going to continue that mission, and it’s great that it’s going in a location that is seen by so many people on a daily basis.”

The location of the piece is strategic — the Portage Road Transportation Center sees over 2,000 boardings per week, to and from Buffalo and within Niagara Falls and Niagara County. Ally Spongr, project director of NFNHA, emphasized that this location is purposeful.

“The Center is central to the community,” she said. “The piece will be incredibly visible and will be able to inspire countless visitors. That’s why we are also including a QR code on the piece. Viewers will be able to scan the code and visit a webpage where they can provide feedback to us that we can take into consideration for future projects.”

NFTA-Metro is looking forward to the impact that the new artwork will have not only on the Portage Road Transportation Center, but on the transportation system in general.

“This project is a great way to enhance our transit center to create an environment that the community will be proud to use while accessing our system,” said Tom George, NFTA’s director of public transportation. “The artwork will provide a friendlier, more inviting atmosphere, while also offering a glimpse into the rich history and unique characteristics of the surrounding neighborhoods, adding positivity to the daily experience of the many people who use the NFTA-Metro services.”

Senator Kennedy, NFTA Announce State Funding For Improvements at Buffalo’s Freedom Wall

Funding from Senator Tim Kennedy Will Help The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission, The East Side Garden Walk and the NFTA Improve the Area Around This Inspiring Landmark

NFTA Seeking Continued Public Input as Important First Steps in the Beautification of the Freedom Wall Take Shape 

BUFFALO, N.Y., - The NFTA and Senator Tim Kennedy joined leadership from the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission (MSAAHCC) and the East Side Garden Walk (ESGW) Thursday to announce $366,000 in state funding for the beautification of Buffalo’s Freedom Wall, an important and moving mural that celebrates our nation’s historic and ongoing struggles for political and social equality. With this state funding, the NFTA Board of Commissioners was able to award a design contract to Watts Architecture and Engineering, a progressive, minority owned local firm for $33,840 to design plans to improve the sidewalk area along the Freedom Wall.

The work includes:

• Reconstruction of the area between the concrete wall and street curbing.
• Installation of LED lighting to accent the wall portraits.
• Replacement of worn street curbing and improvement of sidewalk accessibility.

“The Freedom Wall is a celebration and a tribute to the African American civil rights leaders, past and present, who have transformed the fight for social justice and equality. I’m proud to have secured this funding for the enhancement and beautification of this powerful mural, so that

its vision can truly be showcased and amplified in the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor,” said Senator Tim Kennedy.

“The Freedom Wall is  the most significant public art display in Western New York, says Samantha White, East Side Garden Walk.  It beautifully illustrates both the strength and struggles here in our community, and in our nation, and because of that, it needs to be well cared for, beautifully obtained, and continuously improved. The input from the community meetings so far have shown a significant amount of enthusiastic interest among the community to work together to maintain and improve the area around the wall and thanks to a grant from Senator Tim Kennedy, resources will be available to make those needed improvements.”

“We are so grateful to Senator Kennedy who continuously fights for important and meaningful funding for projects like the beloved Freedom Wall,” said Kim Minkel, NFTA Executive Director. “Thanks to Senator Kennedy we will have the money needed to improve the curb appeal around the Freedom Wall. This moving public art project has become a major destination in Western New York, and we are proud to be part of the Freedom Wall and all it represents.”

As an advocate for the community, the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission endeavors to integrate the African American cultural significance and impact on Buffalo’s history through public engagement, community education that will encourage cultural appreciation, preservation, and community development.

The East Side Garden Walk is an annual self-guided garden tour that aims to create a more vibrant and beautiful community by sharing gardens, stories, and the spirit of perseverance with those from within and outside the east side community and neighborhoods. The ESGW is one way for East Side residents to take control of the narrative that proving community activism can also begin with a garden.

BUFFALO, N.Y., - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Rachel Maloney has been named Manager, Bus and Special Operations.

Rachel is joining Metro operations from the Planning Department where she has been both a Senior Transportation Planner and the Project Manager of Metro’s largest project in a generation, the Amherst Rail Extension project. 

“Rachel’s leadership and professionalism along with her experience as a regular rider of the system will provide tremendous opportunities for advancement of bus operations at Metro as she brings first-hand knowledge to addressing the challenges our riders and employees experience on a daily basis” said Tom George, Director, Public Transportation, NFTA. “It’s wonderful to see her leverage her transit knowledge and previous experience to position our organization for future success.”

With a decade of transportation planning experience, Rachel has been responsible for a wide range of transit activities. She has been influential in multiple long-term planning projects and studies, facility construction, grant management, and public engagement including the establishment of a Citizens Advisory Committee. 

Prior to coming to the NFTA nine years ago, Rachel worked for the Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority as the Grants and Planning Manager and Paratransit Manager in the LIFT Division.  She is a dedicated transit professional who will put the NFTA and its riders in the best position to succeed. 

Rachel holds a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University at Buffalo and is an adjunct professor. She is a graduate of the American Public Transit Association’s Emerging Leaders Program and serves on the American Lung Association Leadership Board and is the Fight for Air Climb Co-Chair. She is also a Buffalo Business First 40 Under 40 recipient.

The surveys cover a variety of topics ranging from scheduling and wait-times to safety and cleanliness. This year, the survey also includes a section dedicated to service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Customers can take the online surveys by visiting nfta.com through May 9.

“We encourage customers to take our survey, said Tom George, Director of Public Transit. The survey helps us collect important feedback from our customers and provides valuable insight on how we can better serve our riding community in the future.”

Survey respondents are eligible to enter a drawing to win Metro monthly passes by including a valid email address or phone number. Only one entry per person. All respondent information will remain confidential and will not be used for any other purpose. Pass winners will be notified by June 30.

The NFTA is conducting the surveys in conjunction with the American Bus Benchmarking Group.  The ABBG is compiled of 17+ medium-sized bus agencies within North America that benchmark performance and share experiences and best practices.

Merchants Insurance Group helps the NFTA, the city and the local economy with renovation work on Main/Seneca street Metro Rail stations.

Buffalo, N.Y. — March 29, 2021— Merchants Insurance Group, partnering with the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA), unveiled the enhanced Main/Seneca Metro Rail stations in downtown Buffalo, New York outside of Merchants’ corporate headquarters. The occasion was marked with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting by Merchants’ President and CEO Robert M. Zak, and Kim Minkel, Executive Director at the NFTA.

“This block of Main Street has been the home for Merchants’ headquarters for more than 90 years” commented Zak. “Our objective in completing this project is to contribute to the ongoing resurgence of downtown Buffalo.”

"It's imperative that we continue to see strong investment throughout our transportation corridors, and this partnership with Merchants Insurance Group is a demonstration not only of their commitment to the City of Buffalo, but to the transit riders that use these networks every day," said Senator Tim Kennedy, Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee.  

"This partnership illustrates Merchants Insurances’ commitment to the Western New York Community,” said Minkel. “We are so appreciative because this beautiful, improved station provides us with a new creative source of revenue and helps us continue to maximize public transportation to better connect people within our community.”

The work on the stations, which are located on the northbound and southbound Metro Rail lines on Main Street between Seneca Street and Swan Street, has been in process for more than a year. The stations were designed to complement the Merchants headquarters building and were rejuvenated with Merchants’ branding through logo wraps and signage, as well as fresh paint in “Merchants Maroon.”

Merchants’ logo signage adorns the top of each station. Scaled-down versions of Merchants’ iconic vertical sign on the front of its headquarters were installed on the side of each station. The signs will be illuminated by solar panels designed and installed by Western New York-based Solar Liberty Energy Solutions Inc., through National Grid. Merchants’ use of an environmentally friendly power source is a continuation of its efforts to reduce its eco-footprint through a variety of initiatives including solar panels on its headquarters’ roof and digitizing insurance transactions.

As a small business insurer, working with local businesses for this project was a priority for Merchants, especially given the COVID-19 pandemic. Buffalo-based branding, advertising, and digital marketing firm Abbey Mecca provided the creative design and project management. Work progressed successfully despite the pandemic, and Merchants and Abbey Mecca worked with several local businesses including Solar Liberty, RW Painting Inc., Streamline Designs, and ASI Signage Installations.

Merchants’ local sourcing for this endeavor is in line with its deep-rooted value of community. Founded in downtown Buffalo more than one hundred years ago in 1918, Merchants values its longstanding role in the Buffalo and Western New York community. The company employs local businesses as frequently as it can on undertakings such as the Metro Rail station renovation, its recent reproduction of its historic vertical blade sign, and its rooftop solar paneling. Merchants also regularly participates in local philanthropic causes and local nonprofit sponsorships.

Merchants’ focus on rejuvenating the train stations is in keeping with other nearby businesses who have worked to improve the foot of Main Street in downtown Buffalo, including Douglas Development, Crowley Webb, Priam Enterprises, and Buffalo Place. These five entities funded the removal of the windscreen from the east side of the 200 block of Main St. near the Metro Rail stations

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority has agreed to purchase 10 battery-electric buses to be delivered in 2022 from New Flyer of America Inc., at a cost of $10.1 million dollars. The Agreement includes an option to purchase up to 140 additional buses over a five-year period.

This is a major milestone in New York State’s and the NFTA’s ongoing effort to improve air quality for all.

“The purchase of the buses will help reduce Western New York’s carbon footprint,” said NFTA Executive Director Kim Minkel, this is a major step forward for us and a move in alignment with Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s ongoing commitment for statewide clean energy. We are grateful to our elected officials, like Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, Senator Tim Kennedy, Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes, the entire WNY delegation along with our business and community partners for their help to make this happen.”

The New York Power Authority will oversee the installation of state-of-the-art overhead motorized depot pantograph charging inside the Cold Springs garage. Drivers will be able to park a bus inside the garage and automatically the ceiling-mounted pantograph arm will electrically connect to the roof of the bus to charge its battery overnight.

The electrification initiative is part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s nation-leading plan to increase the number of electric buses in the state to mitigate climate change, create healthier communities, improve air quality, and boost access to clean transportation in underserved communities. NFTA has committed to having 25 percent of its buses electric by 2025 and 100 percent by 2035. Taking diesel-powered vehicles out of service reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves air quality in support of New York’s clean energy and climate goals in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

BUFFALO, N.Y.  - The Niagara Frontier Transit Metro System is the winner of the 2020 Bus and Rail Safety and Security Gold Excellence Award. The high honor is from the American Public Transportation Association.

APTA recognized Metro with the top honor gold award for the implementation of a new light rail/streetcar contractor safety and security program.  The program includes revised policies on right-of-way and blue flag signal protection training, flagman procedures, compliance inspections, updates to lockout/tagout procedures, and personal protective equipment compliance.  The execution of this comprehensive initiative has led to increased safety awareness for contractors performing work within Metro’s light rail system and significantly fewer reportable on-the-job incidents.

The APTA Bus and Rail Safety and Security Excellence Awards recognizes public transit providers for their pioneering and proactive safety and security programs.  Nominations are evaluated on four criteria: effectiveness, benefit level, innovation, and transferability. BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, in partnership with Magnusmode, launched a free app that assists NFTA- Metro riders as well as air travelers at the Buffalo Airport with cognitive disabilities. It’s called, MagnusCards, it’s a free app now featuring NFTA card decks.

The NFTA card decks  increase travel accessibility for those with cognitive disabilities by using digital guides to help people access the airports, bus, and rail. Magnus, an interactive character, acts as the guide providing the user with reassurances and reinforcing routine. The card deck uses pictures along with plain language text to offer step-by-step travel instructions.

“MagnusCards allow us to help all of our riders and air travelers experience the exceptional customer service at our airports, and Metro bus and rail,” said Kim Minkel, executive director of the NFTA. “This is another step in our ongoing efforts to make mobility as inclusive as possible in the Western New York Community.”

“Airports, and transit systems are busy and complex environments,” said Nadia Hamilton, Founder and President of Magnusmode. “It can all be overwhelming for people with cognitive special needs and their families. By making activities more predictable and manageable – for example, going through security screening – MagnusCards reduce the stress and anxiety that often accompanies air travel.”

Magnusmode founder Nadia Hamilton is a past 43 North winner, having this innovative tool available for Western New Yorkers is important for the community first organization.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Every year, hundreds of students come to the Buffalo Airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) facility to get a firsthand look at operations and learn about fire prevention. This year, however, due to COVID-19 concerns, in-person visits are no longer possible, so the ARFF’s fire-fighting team made a video (a virtual “Open House”). This video is available for students throughout Western New York, online 24/7. The “Open House” video gives a behind the scenes look at the Buffalo Airport firefighting team, its facility, and provides valuable fire prevention tips to help keep families safe. 

“It’s another way to reach the community,” Kim Minkel, Executive Director, NFTA said. “We are making the video available for students in an effort to keep fire prevention and safety top of mind.”

“The virtual, Open House highlights fire prevention information including important kitchen safety tips.” says ARFF fire chief William Major. “With more families at home working, learning, and cooking, it is important to stay alert and practice vigilant household fire safety.”

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) and the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) are seeking an artist to create a public art mural inside the NFTA’s Portage Road Transportation Center (PRTC). The goal of the project is to enhance the atmosphere of the public indoor waiting area by creating a beautiful work of art. The Transportation Center is located in the heart of the City of Niagara Falls, and sees more than 2,000 boarding’s per week, with services to and from Buffalo and Niagara County.

“This project is a great way to enhance our transit center to create an environment that the community will be proud to use while accessing our system” said Tom George, director of public transportation, NFTA.  The artwork will provide a friendlier, more inviting atmosphere, while also offering a glimpse into the rich history and unique characteristics of the surrounding neighborhoods, positively to the daily experience of the many people who use the NFTA-Metro services.

“By creating a vibrant artwork at the NFTA’s Portage Road Transportation Center, our hope is that the experience will generate feelings of comfort, safety and pride for riders and community members”, said Ally Spongr, project director, NFNHA. The mural at the PRTC will join a collective of new public art murals being created in the City’s North End that focus on the history and culture of local communities.

Artists are invited to submit their qualifications for consideration online at discoverniagara.org/blog. Any artist residing in Western New York is welcome to apply. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, December 15.

NFTA Partners with FeedMore WNY to Fight Hunger Amid Pandemic

Agency Reaches Out to Community to Collect Food Donations for Those in Need

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (“NFTA”) announced today that it is partnering with FeedMore WNY to help collect food for those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NFTA launched its holiday food drive on November 23, just before Thanksgiving. The goal is to collect as many canned goods and non-perishables as possible. This year, putting food on the table is a struggle more than ever for many families, and especially as we go into the holiday season.

FeedMore WNY exists to make sure our hungry community members of all ages, backgrounds and circumstances have enough nutritious food to eat. However, FeedMore WNY cannot fulfill its mission without the support of the community. Prior to the pandemic, FeedMore WNY served as many as 135,000 individuals in any given month. Since COVID-19 hit Western New York in March, thousands more people have been reaching out for food assistance.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 health crisis has greatly increased the need for food assistance in Western New York. As many as one in six people in FeedMore WNY’s four-county service area may struggle with hunger due to the pandemic.
