Additional benefits include longevity pay and additional payment for annual EMT certification.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is happy to announce the return of the Parks Adventure Bus. The NFTA is thrilled to bring the service back for a second year thanks to partnerships with the New York State Office of Parks Recreation & Historic Preservation, the Erie County Parks Department, the Department of Environmental Conservation and Senator Tim Kennedy.
Starting Saturday, June 17th, the NFTA will offer free bus service to nine of Western New York’s most popular parks.
In 2022, the Parks Adventure Bus connected more than 550 Western New Yorkers to area parks.
New York State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “New York State Parks is proud and happy to partner once again with the NFTA to offer the Parks Adventure Bus this summer. We look forward to welcoming riders to our participating parks and witnessing their delight in seeing our special landscapes, many for the first time. State Parks is grateful to the NFTA for their work to make this happen once again.”
Western New York has many beautiful outdoor spaces, and this program will provide riders with much-needed access to some of its best recreation destinations.
"By offering this unique service, the NFTA is streamlining accessibility to adventure and the many great parks and beaches our region has to offer," said Senator Tim Kennedy. "I'm proud to partner with them to help Western New Yorkers truly experience our great outdoors this summer."
Service will begin June 17th and every Saturday through August 5, with a possible make-up day on Saturday, August 12th, departing from the bus station in downtown Buffalo (181 Ellicott Street).

BUFFALO, NY- The Niagara Frontier Transit Police are pleased to announce their participation in the 2023 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New York.
The Special Agent William M Fallon Memorial Leg begins Thursday, June 8. Around eight NFTA officers will run this year, with one designated as the guardian of the flame.
“We’ve had some officers participate in years past, but this is our first year running as a unit,” said aviation division Captain Lou Loubert. “It’s an honor to run alongside all of our fellow law enforcement officers and bring awareness to the ever-present need for acceptance and inclusion for those with intellectual disabilities.”
Participating NFTA officers will meet at 1404 Main Street at 10:30 A.M. The run will end at FBI Headquarters on Niagara Street and South Elmwood.
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced its seasonal launch of Metro’s Trolley Bus Service to guests at participating Niagara Falls hotels and motels beginning Friday, May 26 through Sunday, October 29, 2023. Metro’s Niagara Falls Trolley buses will serve Niagara Falls Boulevard, Pine Avenue, the Niagara Falls International Airport, and downtown Niagara Falls, USA.
Special trolley route stop signs indicate where riders can board a Metro trolley. In downtown Niagara Falls, stops include the Aquarium of Niagara Falls, the Seneca Niagara Casino, and across from the Niagara Falls USA Official Visitor Center at First Street and Rainbow Blvd. Service will also be provided to hotels and shops along Third Street, Rainbow Blvd., and Buffalo Avenue. In addition, stops are located along Pine Avenue, at the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, and at several motels along Niagara Falls Blvd. and Little Italy.
The Trolley Day Pass, supported by the Niagara Falls bed tax, allows guests of participating Niagara Falls hotels and motels free access to Metro’s trolley bus service and the entire Metro Bus and Rail system in Niagara and Erie Counties. Participating hotels and motels will issue free trolley day passes through the Token Transit smartphone app this year. Guests will receive an email containing the free pass, which must be activated in the app before boarding a Metro bus. The pass allows hotel and motel guests to ride free all day wherever Metro service is available. In 2022, Metro trolleys served 31K+ passengers.

Operation hours are from 9 a.m. until midnight as follows: May 26-June 11, weekends only (Fri–Sun), June 12-September 24 (daily), and September 29-October 29, weekends only (Fri-Sun). Those without a trolley day pass can ride the trolley by paying Metro's regular adult fare of $2, $1 for children (5-11 yrs.), seniors (65 yrs. and over), disabled, and Medicare clients with valid I.D. All other Metro passes are also valid. Children four and younger ride free; limit to three children per fare-paying adult.
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Another major step in the ongoing effort to improve NFTA-Metro’s Rail system. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is alerting passengers that starting Wednesday, May 31, the bus loop at University Station will close for construction.
Metro Bus service will continue with the following stop changes:
- Routes #8 and #12 will stop at Main Street
- Routes #5, #13, #19, #34, #44, #47, #48, #49, and #81 will utilize the Main Circle on the University at Buffalo campus
Metro Rail will operate on a regular schedule.
The station itself will remain open during construction; however, riders will have to use the upper entrance across from Main Circle while work is in progress. Riders can visit https://metro.nfta.com/schedules/university-station for a map of temporary bus pick-up and drop-off locations.
Construction will widen the bus loop making more room for buses and creating more space for operators to navigate the roadway. This project is part of NFTA-Metro's continuing improvement to public transportation in Buffalo-Niagara, including new bus shelters across the region, new rail stations downtown, and more convenient ways to access transit service.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of Summer.
We have an update on the Paratransit accident that occurred this morning at the 190/290 split. We are very sad to share that one of our Metro-Link employees, 60-year-old Chequita Smith was killed in that accident.
The driver and passenger were treated for non-life threating injuries.
Smith worked with us for more than nine years as an operator and instructor.
Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with her have lost a dear friend.
No words can adequately express our sadness. We ask that you please keep Chequita’s family and friends in your prayers.
BUFFALO, N.Y. –An NFTA-Metro Paratransit vehicle was involved in a roll-over accident that took place shortly after 6 A.M. on the 190-290 split.
Three people were in the vehicle when it overturned. All were taken to Erie County Medical Center, one with serious injuries.
The accident is currently being investigated and we will provide more information when details become available.
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Runway 5-23 at Buffalo Niagara International Airport will be under construction beginning Monday May 8, 2023, until September 2023.
These renovations are part of ongoing planned preventative maintenance to the airport’s primary runway, to ensure the highest safety standards are upheld.
During construction, people in the region will notice planes using alternative flight paths more frequently and sound patterns will temporarily change.
All involved in the project have worked very hard to minimize any impact on travelers and residents in the surrounding community. Construction will take place during the day with occasional overnight work, during times in which there are very few or no scheduled flights.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is hosting the 55th Annual Snow Symposium April 22-26, at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. The general session began today at 9:00 A.M. with events running until 4:30 P.M.
Organizers expect hundreds of airport professionals from all over the world to view the latest snow removal equipment and learn pioneering techniques. Lee Weitz, Director of Aviation for the NFTA, will open the conference highlighting the economic and safety concerns that make snow, slush, and ice mitigation significant and the importance of implementing successful strategies.
"We saw firsthand this year with back-to-back snow storms the dangerous conditions ice and snow can create. Sharing our experience with snow removal teams and hearing best practices is invaluable information," Weitz said.
Keynote speakers on Tuesday , at 11:00 A.M. include Buffalo Niagara International Airport Airfield Supervisor Joe Guarino, Buffalo Airport Fire Chief William Major, and Transit Police Aviation Division Captain Louis Loubert who spearheaded lifesaving operations during the historic December blizzard.
The Buffalo Niagara International Airport will be presented with its 8th Balchen/Post Award, given to airport snow-control teams that demonstrate determination and excellence in keeping airport runways open and safe during winter storms.
BUFFALO, N.Y. - -The Niagara Frontier Transit Authority is making traveling on public transportation easier for the visually impaired. Use of the "AIRA" (Artificial Intelligence Remote Access) program is being expanded from the Buffalo and Niagara airports to also include Metro Bus and Rail.
The Aira app connects travelers with professionals who are trained to assist people who are blind or have low vision. The technology allows an agent, through a smart phone camera, to aid in navigating the roadways for the client as well as checking bus times, and other tasks.
“We are committed to helping every member of the public travel safely, and this service addition is a step in that direction,” says Kim Minkel, executive director of the Niagara Frontier Transportation.
Aira is free for metro users and at the Buffalo Niagara International and Niagara Falls International Airports. The service is currently in more than 40 airports across the United States.
BUFFALO, N.Y. -The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is seeking professional creators to incorporate public art into the new DL&W Station.
The goal is to find an artist who is knowledgeable of the history of the station and will ensure the resulting images resonate with light rail patrons and the surrounding Cobblestone community.
General themes for artwork include travel and motion, play and celebration, history and culture, and interaction with water and Great Lakes.
Applicants must submit an RFP proposal (12 page maximum) with the following:
- Artist statement with description of your interest in the project
- Brief description of overall themes reflected in your artwork and how they relate to said project.
- Six images of recently completed public art relevant to said project.
- Annotated image sheet including title, media, dimensions, completion date, location, commissioning agency, budget, description, and corresponding image.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) honored the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) with the prestigious Gold Standard Award for safety in its rail system Thursday, April 6. NFTA is one of only four transit agencies nationwide to receive this recognition this year.
The Gold Standard Award is the highest level of recognition TSA can give to a transit agency for achieving top scores during an annual review of 17 categories of security and emergency preparedness elements. The review evaluates several aspects of a transit agency’s operations, including its security plan, security training, drills and exercise programs, public outreach efforts and background check procedures.
“This Gold Standard Award symbolizes NFTA’s commitment to its passengers, its adherence to core principles and its leadership in mass transit security,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske, who was in Buffalo this week. “We are proud partners with NFTA and we are pleased to recognize them for their continued commitment to transportation security.”
The NFTA is a regional multi-modal transportation authority responsible for airport and surface transportation in Erie and Niagara counties. NFTA/NFTM businesses include a bus, rail and ADA paratransit system, two commercial airports, and transportation centers in Buffalo and Niagara Falls.In 2016, a J.D. Power study ranked the Buffalo Niagara International Airport second highest in customer satisfaction for medium sized airports in North America.
“We are so proud to receive the TSA Gold Standard Award,” said NFTA Executive Director Kim Minkel. “This serves as a testament towards our commitment to the safety of our riders and community. Everyone in the organization is dedicated to the highest standard of safety and security.”
TSA has oversight of nearly 6,800 public transit agencies in the country. Every year, the TSA assesses a select number of transit agencies nationwide for evaluation through its Baseline Assessment for Security Enhancement (BASE) program. Just a fraction of those evaluated achieve scores high enough to receive the Gold Standard Award.
In the most recent round of BASE evaluations, TSA reviewed 108 mass transit agencies for their security posture. NFTA distinguished itself among the nation’s transit agencies to earn its second Gold Standard Award. In addition to NFTA, the other three agencies that earned honors were the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, Sacramento Regional Transit District and Jacksonville Transportation Authority.

BUFFALO, N.Y., - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority wants to hear from riders and is inviting the public to participate in its annual Metro bus and rail customer satisfaction survey. These surveys cover several topics ranging from scheduling and wait times to safety and cleanliness.
“We encourage customers to take our survey," said James Morrell, Director of Public Transit. The feedback we receive gives us valuable insight on how we can better serve our riding community in the future.”
Past surveys have led to several improvements in the bus and rail system, including a bus shelter expansion program that saw 30 new shelters in 2023, with 30 more planned per year for the next four years.
Survey respondents can enter a drawing to win Metro monthly passes and Tops gift cards by including a valid email address or phone number. One entry per person. All respondent information will remain confidential and will not be used for any other purpose.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -In ongoing efforts to recruit for the Transit Police, the Niagara Frontier Transit Authority is calling on the community to come and learn what it takes to be a part of the force. NFTA Transit Officers will be at the Frank E Merriweather Library Saturday, March 25, hosting an informational session for the upcoming police exam.
“We want people to understand that we put an emphasis on community policing. Our goal is to build a team that reflects the community we serve,” said police chief Brian Patterson. “This session allows us to bridge the gap with the public, and share the many opportunities for advancement, great benefits, and job security they can take advantage of when they become a member of the Transit Police Force.”
The one-hour event will include opportunities to apply for the exam with a $25 sitting fee.
The event runs from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Niagara Falls Transit Authority along with Senator Tim Kennedy were pleased to join the community Monday night at Cold Spring Garage to announce the completion of the beautification project for the Buffalo Freedom Wall.
With the generous funding of over $700,000 from Senator Kennedy and partnerships with the Albright- Knox Art Gallery and the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, the NFTA has enhanced the side walk area along Michigan and Ferry Streets.
The twenty eight civil rights leaders from past and present featured on the mural are now in the “spotlight” with a new state of the art LED lighting system, providing a glow to one of the city’s most recognizable works of public art. The work also includes replacement of worn street curbing, improvements of sidewalk accessibility, and a depiction of the Pan-African flag along the wall and in the outer sidewalk.
"This enhancement project ensures that the Freedom Wall is truly illuminated and appreciated in the way it deserves to be. From the very beginning of this process, it was important to us that we were collaborating with groups like the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission and members of the East Side Garden Walk to discuss what these improvements would look like and how they would be incorporated into this powerful piece of art," said Senator Tim Kennedy.
“We are so grateful to Senator Kennedy who made this important and meaningful project come to life,” said Kim Minkel, NFTA Executive Director. “Thanks to Senator Kennedy we had the money needed to improve the curb appeal around the Freedom Wall as well as the special lighting. This moving public art project has become a major destination in Western New York, and we are proud to be part of the Freedom Wall and all it represents.”

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) is proud to announce this year’s winner of our Black History Month art contest is Tyshaun Tyson.
The artwork features a stunning depiction of Black inventor Garrett Morgan, holding his invention, the traffic signal, with red, yellow, and green lights beaming through a dark sky.
The piece was revealed Thursday, February 23 during a press conference at Cold Spring Station.
Tyson’s work will grace the side of three buses with the opportunity to be seen by thousands of people and continue to expand the growth of NFTA-Metro’s public art experiences.
Tyshaun is well known in the community for his artwork including a Main Street scape in Niagara Falls and the overseeing of the “You Are Not Alone” mural on Bailey Avenue in Buffalo.
During this month and beyond, NFTA-Metro will salute the vibrant Black legacies here on the Niagara Frontier, along with our many employees throughout the authority.
As of Thursday February 23, NFTA Metro Rail is operating underground service only due to severe weather . Shuttle buses will run between Fountain Plaza and Canalside Stations.
Bus and Paratransit service are not affected at this time.

BUFFALO, N.Y.- It’s been a busy start of the year for our NFTA Transit Police K-9 Unit, and one pup has been selected for a special assignment that’s far from “ruff”!
The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) is excited to announce that K-9 Eiko and Officer Elliot Justinger are in Utah to work during the NBA All Star Game!
The duo made their way out West this past Tuesday. Eiko is an Explosive Detection Canine and will work security detail at various events during All Star Weekend.
This is their first-time working security detail for the event, and they are excited to bring a bit of Buffalo to Salt Lake City.
In 2022, the pair was also selected to work the Super Bowl in Inglewood California.

Pups Liza and Eci with their handlers Officer Luke Whelan and Officer Dina Bigham will head out West to work security detail at various event locations before and during the big game. The duo will work alongside different K-9 handlers from around the country.
“It’s an honor to be selected to represent our department and the City of Good Neighbors at such a large-scale event,” said Officer Dina Bigham. “We both are very excited for the opportunity to work at another Super Bowl.”
Three years ago, Liza and Eci had the opportunity to work Super Bowl LIV in Miami. Their owners say they are hoping this time around the Buffalo Bills will be joining them there!
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) held a press conference Thursday, January 19 to announce its new campaign encouraging passengers of the Metro Rail to “Ride Nice.”
The goal is to take proactive measures ensuring riders feel safe with an overarching campaign that ties in the NFTA code of conduct with informational changes to Metrorail.
With increased Transit Police presence, along with coordination from Senator Tim Kennedy, the Buffalo Board of Education, and Buffalo Peacemakers, the NFTA will work with the community to put forth a positive message and create a comfortable environment for all passengers.
"This is truly a collaborative initiative; I'm pleased to see the NFTA partnering with the Buffalo Peacemakers and the Buffalo Board of Education to unveil this important campaign," said Senator Tim Kennedy. "By implementing these changes, the NFTA is demonstrating a commitment to improving rider safety and experience throughout the Metro Rail system."

BUFFALO, N.Y.- NFTA-Metro is holding an Open House Thursday January 12 to inform the community on current job opportunities. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 181 Ellicott St.

BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Niagara Frontier Transit Authority is thrilled to announce its annual holiday food drive with FeedMore WNY saw record donations this year!
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the City of Good Neighbors, the NFTA collected 1,050 pounds of canned goods and non-perishables between the Buffalo Airport Firehouse and the Metro Customer Center.
This helped provide meals for over 870 WNY families and more than doubled what was donated last year.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -After assessment of current conditions, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) announced the airfield at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport will remain closed until 11:00 a.m.Wednesday December 28, 2022, due to extreme weather.
High winds and low visibility at the airport over the holiday weekend created hazardous conditions.
Pittsburgh Airport has reached out and will be sending some snow plowing equipment to assist
and airport crews are working around the clock to ensure safe travels as soon as possible.

Metro Rail service will continue with trains leaving every half-hour.
Paratransit service remains suspended.

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y., At the start of the blizzard on Friday, Demetrice and Danielle lost power at their home in Williamsville, so they packed their kids up Aayden, (8), Aubree (4), Jordynn (2), and Judah (9 months) and headed to a local hotel. The roads and visibility were treacherous and their vehicle got stuck. Demetrice and Danielle were one of many motorist stuck in the roundabout on Aero and Youngs Road. Buffalo Airport Fire Fighters, Mike Carrubba, Mark Wolhfiel and Joel Eberth rescued 42 people, and brought them to the ARFF Facility. Demetrice and Danielle were the only ones with young children so they stayed in the firehouse and even through they were away from home, they had a great holiday for the family and firefighters. Aayden asked if he could be in uniform with us and was given a uniform and department T-shirt and learned about dispatch.
“It was an amazing experience for our firefighters and it definitely made us better people.” Said Joel Eberth, Assistant Chief Buffalo Airport Fire Department. “With them being here, Christmas became a big concern because Aayden was so excited that Santa would know he was here and he would get to celebrate at a real firehouse and we didn’t want to disappoint, so we were able to find several items in the firehouse to wrap for the family and with the amazing help from the field office delivering some items from the terminal, we were able to make sure Santa paid a visit.”
This was certainly a very different, but joyful holiday for everyone.
