The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority started accepting applications in the beginning of the year. Talented local students will perform live holiday music from Friday, December 13 through Friday, December 20. The holiday entertainment has become a highly popular tradition and helps bring joy to travelers in our busy downtown bus terminal and throughout our Metro system. This year we will be collecting “Gifts of Warmth” to benefit the families and children of The Salvation Army of Buffalo.
“Buffalo Public School’s Music Department is excited to partner with NFTA Metro and the Salvation Army for the 2019 Sounds of the Season holiday performances. Daily live events will showcase the diverse musical talents of BPS students as they bring holiday merriment and joy to travelers and Metro customers throughout the holiday season while raising awareness to a great cause of supporting families through donations of warm clothing to the Salvation Army,” said James Schwanz, Musical Supervisor for Buffalo Public Schools.
“The Salvation Army is thrilled to be the beneficiary of the gifts of warmth collection from NFTA Metro and Buffalo Public Schools. We will be distributing them in our Homeless Family Shelter, as well as our Homeless Street Feed Program, to those in need of socks, gloves, hats and scarves,” said Major Annette Lock. “Community partnerships like these are so important to our mission of basic needs, especially in Buffalo’s cold winters.

BUFFALO, N.Y., - The Buffalo Niagara International Airport held a Topping Out ceremony, commemorating the installation of the highest steel beam in the first phase of the Airport upgrade. In an ancient Scandinavian tradition, a small evergreen is attached to the tallest beam so that no structure is, at least symbolically, higher than the trees.
“As a frequent traveler at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, I know how important this project is to improve the traveling experience and support continued economic growth in Buffalo and Western New York,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who attended today’s ceremony. “Our airport is ranked as one of the best in the nation, and these upgrades will help ensure we maintain the highest standards to benefit travelers from near and far.”
Congressman Brian Higgins said, “Flight options and usage continue to grow at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport and this $61 million project allows the airport to grow with it. Today we raise the bar, both figuratively and literally on the Buffalo Airport experience, accommodating the efficient flow of operations and passengers to keep pace with the needs of today and tomorrow.”

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport’s #BUFup project is expected to take three years. It will improve passenger-dynamics throughout the terminal, including the security entrance, public exits, inspection areas and baggage claim. The upgrade also creates more comfortable waiting areas for passengers transitioning to cars, buses and vans.

Earlier this year, Evans Bancorp purchased the naming rights for the NFTA’s Lafayette Square above-ground Metro Rail station. Located steps away from the bank’s Business & Relationship Center at Main & Court Streets, the new station promotes the bank’s presence in downtown Buffalo.

BUFFALO, N.Y., - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is going pink for the month of October in support of breast cancer awareness. The NFTA is doing its part to help bring attention to this important cause in various ways, all starting on Tuesday, October 1.
The NFTA will be turning the water in the two fountains outside the Buffalo Niagara International Airport pink using an LED system; the NFTA’s Transit Police patrol vehicle will bear a pink decal and officers will proudly be exchanging their regular badges for pink versions for the month; the Buffalo Airport firefighting trucks will be adorned with pink decals; and there will be special rider-alerts on Metro-Buses and the rail, encouraging regular mammography exams. The Fountain Plaza Metro Rail Station and Buffalo International Airport will highlight the month with special pink lighting.
The NFTA will also be displaying specially-designed logos on its website and social media channels throughout the month.
One out of every eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime, which is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. About 85 percent of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. There is no known prevention of breast cancer, but if it is found early and treated, there is a good chance for a cure. That is why it is so important for women to commit to breast cancer detection practices including self-exams and mammograms.
“We are excited to be ‘going pink’ in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month,” said Kim Minkel, NFTA executive director, “it is our hope that these initiatives will help remind our riders and community members of the importance of annual breast cancer screenings.”
In further support of breast cancer awareness month and the many individuals affected by this disease, the NFTA is inviting riders to show their support by wearing pink while using Metro bus or rail on Friday, October 11, 2019.

BUFFALO, N.Y., - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) is encouraging members of the public to attend the next Metro Rail Expansion Project event on the evening of Tuesday, September 24th at Sweet Home Middle School.
The meeting will focus on updated design concepts, recap the traffic analysis results, preliminary environmental analysis and impacts and proposed mitigation measures. In addition, we invite the public to provide information on known built historic properties or archaeological sites pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Organizers are hoping to receive community input on the updated concept and potential impacts and related mitigation prior to issuing the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) in the fall of 2019.
“We want to give the public the opportunity to review and comment on the design updates and to preview the impacts and potential mitigation measures prior to issuing the DEIS,” said Kim Minkel NFTA Executive Director. “This is a chance for the community to provide input on the preliminary environmental findings in a casual forum prior to holding an official public hearing early next year.”

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The year was 1986, Lionel Richie had the number one song, “Say You, Say Me,” “Top Gun” led at the box office, and here in Western New York, the NFTA displayed special tiles made from the selected drawings of local students on the walls of its headquarters. This was all part of a project sponsored by Tops Market. In total, there were 198 ceramic tiles, designed by renown artist, Jackson Gregory.
The ceramic tiles are displayed on two walls, and due to construction at the MTC, (181 Ellicott) will have to come down. The NFTA is reaching out to the public, in the hopes of finding as many of the artists who created the tiles as possible and will try its best to save the tiles and give them to their rightful owners. A special display has been created for those to identify their works on nfta.com. If you see your artwork and would like the tile, please e-mail, tile@nfta.com , include the number and name on the tile, as well as the description, please provide the date and general time you will be coming in to pick up the tile. The tiles will be available for pick up from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting on October, 14th.

BUFFALO, N.Y. . . NFTA-Metro is looking for all Transit Geeks to compete in “METRIVIA.” A game of knowledge that focuses on facts and figures of Public Transportation. You can play the game at NFTA-Metro’s exhibit at the Taste of Buffalo presented by Tops, July 13-14.
METRIVIA is part of Metro’s on-site community display, located in the traffic circle near Niagara Square. You will also find the new community/ training bus and Metro’s new low-floor paratransit van for use by riders with special needs. Metro’s training bus provides a hands-on “classroom” for Metro personnel and includes an external awning for community engagement activities. Both vehicles will be available for attendees to board, watch “how-to” videos and learn about the benefits of using public transit. Visitors (aka “contestants”) can spin the METRIVIA wheel and answer questions to win prizes. NFTA staff will also be on hand to talk about Metro programs, projects, and employment opportunities.
To avoid the hassles of driving and parking, the NFTA is encouraging the public to take Metro Rail to the Taste of Buffalo. Festival-goers can park at Metro’s LaSalle or University lots for free and take Metro Rail to Lafayette or Fountain Plaza Stations, which are both a short walk to the festival.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that the Niagara Falls International Airport will again play host to a unique 5K race using its main runway, Sunday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m.
The Calspan Run The Runway, a certified 5K race, will take place exclusively on the airport’s main 10,825 foot long runway and adjoining taxiways. The event is being coordinated by Eclipse Multi-Sport, a local race management company that highlights the family experience
in fitness activities and has raised thousands of dollars for charitable partners in WNY for over a decade.
William R. Vanecek, the NFTA’s Director of Aviation said, “We are pleased to once again have Calspan as our major sponsor and host this special community event at our airport. Using the main runway as the race course gives participants a unique perspective as they will have an opportunity to be on a course that most people never have.”

New this year is the addition of a Kids Fun Run for youngsters 12 years & under using a shorter modified course and aviation enthusiast Paul Faltyn starting the race by-way of a flyover using a helicopter!!
The Niagara Aerospace Museum has been designated to receive a portion of the net proceeds from the race. The museum located in the former NFIA terminal, displays a varied collection of aviation artifacts, in addition to providing extensive education programming, focusing on the area’s role in our nation’s extensive aerospace history.
Registration for this year’s race is now open. Participants can sign up online at eclipsemultisport.com. Last year’s inaugural race attracted approximately 400 runners, who had the rare opportunity to run a 5K race on a course that provided open vistas of the airfield and terminal, while running a flat course. Last year’s winning time was 19 minutes, 23 seconds.
Participants and guests will be screened prior to accessing the secure side of the terminal’s ramp area, just as they would prior to taking a flight. Registration opens at 8 a.m., with the race starting at 10 a.m. Free parking will be available in airport lots. Participants are encouraged to carpool. NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced its seasonal launch of Metro’s Trolley Service to guests staying at participating Niagara Falls hotels and motels beginning Friday, May 17. Metro’s Niagara Falls Trolley buses will serve Niagara Falls Boulevard, Pine Avenue, the Niagara Falls International Airport and downtown Niagara Falls, USA.
Special Trolley stop signs along the route indicate where riders can board a Metro trolley.
In downtown Niagara Falls, trolley stops include the Aquarium of Niagara Falls, the Seneca Niagara Casino, and across from the Niagara Falls USA Official Visitor Center at First and Rainbow. Service will also be provided to hotels and shops along Third Street, Rainbow Blvd. and Buffalo Avenue. In addition, stops are located along Pine Avenue, at the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, several motels along Niagara Falls Boulevard and Little Italy.
Patrons receive their free 2019 trolley day passes upon request at participating hotels and motels. The trolley pass, supported by the local Niagara Falls bed tax, allows pass holders free access to the trolley service and the entire Metro Bus and Rail system in Niagara and Erie counties. Passes must be validated in Niagara County and may be used anytime on the date the pass is punched by the Metro operator.

Those without a trolley day pass can ride the trolley by paying Metro's regular adult fare of $2, $1 for children (5-11 yrs.), seniors (65 yrs. and over), disabled and Medicare clients with valid I.D. Buffalo, NY- Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns, the NFTA and TSA have teamed up to help residents in obtaining their REAL ID or Enhanced Driver’s License for air travel. The Erie County Auto Bureau staff will assist travelers with their visit by providing accurate information on what specifically will be required for licenses and non-driver IDs before October 1, 2020. Kearns will ensure that customers are educated and will have the proper documents needed for their visit to the Auto Bureau. The County Clerk’s initiative is to educate and prepare travelers for the REAL ID deadline in order to make processing REAL IDs and Enhanced Driver’s licenses more efficient. This will also reduce wait times when customers visit the Erie County Auto Bureau. Staff will also help customers with scheduling an on-line reservation at a date and time most convenient for customers.
When it was passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act established minimum security standards for state issued driver licenses, permits and ID cards. Beginning October 1, 2020, the federal government will require drivers licenses, permits or ID cards to be REAL ID compliant if a person wants to use the documents to board a domestic flight (within the U.S.), enter military bases or enter certain federal facilities.
County Clerk Kearns stated, “In order to better serve Erie County residents, I am implementing the ‘Ready, Reserve, Renew’ campaign. Over the next 500 days between now and October 1, 2020 when the REAL ID Act takes effect, my office will be hosting a minimum of 250 CLERK ON THE GO Outreaches throughout Erie County starting here at the Buffalo International Airport.”
“We are doing everything possible to ensure that our travelers, who rely on us to get them to where they’re going remain as informed as possible” said Bill Vanecek, NFTA aviation director. “That’s why it is so important to get the word out early and to be sure questions about REAL ID are addressed.”
According to TSA, REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the federal government to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver's licenses and identification cards. The improvements are intended to inhibit terrorists' ability to evade detection by using fraudulent identification.
Kearns encourages those who need their current ID updated into a Federal Compliant ID to make an on-line reservation at the Auto Bureau before visiting. Kearns stated, “By utilizing our on-line reservation system, customers are guaranteed service at an office conveniently located near them, at a time of their choice. In short, they will not have to wait in line. I encourage everyone to take advantage of our CLERK ON THE GO Outreaches and #GETREADY for the Real ID Act. When customers utilize this service with the proper forms and documents, transaction time at the auto bureau is more efficient and convenient.”

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority formally begins construction of terminal enhancements at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, the project we affectionally call #BUFUP, on Monday, May 13.
Kimberley Minkel, NFTA executive director, said, “In 2018, J.D. Power ranked the Buffalo Niagara International Airport number one in customer satisfaction for medium-sized airports in North America. We are not resting on those laurels. The improvements will help ensure Buffalo remains the finest airport in North America.”
The largest upgrade for the Airport since the new terminal’s construction, this series of enhancements is all about passenger flow. Airplanes rely on aerodynamics to fly; superior airports pay attention to passenger-dynamics. The Buffalo Airport is investing in ways to improve passenger movement through the terminal, making it as easy and efficient as possible. Upgrades include a wider security entrance, doubling the number of exits, larger inspection areas and faster baggage claim. The upgrade also creates more comfortable waiting areas for passengers transitioning to cars, buses and vans. The project is expected to take three years. Buffalo Hosts the 53rd Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium
Who: Airfield professionals from across the country and world
What: The 53rd Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium, this is an equipment year, so the Buffalo convention center will be filled with a diverse variety of winter operations equipment, related services and solutions for airports. This event is presented by the Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives and the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Focused exclusively on airfield snow removal and winter operations, the purpose of the event this year is to provide new educational programs, more opportunities for networking, a variety of ideas about winter operations, and a range of partnership sponsorship opportunities.
To clean-up after a heavy snowstorm and to absorb the associated operating delays can easily cost a major airport more than a quarter of a million dollars. Another purpose of the snow symposium is to show how these costs can be minimized by utilizing the sound strategies, effective equipment and efficient techniques for coping with snow, slush and ice.

NFTA Metro Police officers are asking for help finding a missing teenager.
Police say 14-year-old Beonica Henley was last seen Wednesday evening at a friend’s home in Buffalo.
According to officers, the Buffalo teenager may have been at a Metro Rail location over the past 24 hours. Transit Police are working collaboratively with the Buffalo Police Department.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Tobacco-Free Erie-Niagara and the NFTA are uniting against tobacco use on March 20th, and they join
thousands of young people nationwide to mark Kick Butts Day. More than 1,000 events are planned across the United States
for this annual day of youth activism, sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
Today, the NFTA-Metro announced an increased No Smoking campaign, that includes amplified signage at bus stops and
on the rail. “We are increasing awareness of the anti-smoking laws through improved customer signage and backing it
up with increased enforcement activities as this is a very serious issue for our riders” said Director of Public Transit,
Tom George.
On Kick Butts Day, kids encourage their peers to be tobacco-free, reject tobacco companies' devious marketing and urge elected officials to help make the next generation tobacco-free.
Secondhand smoke is a human carcinogen for which there is no safe level of exposure, not even outdoors. According to
the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), secondhand smoke causes more than 7,300 lung cancer deaths among U.S. nonsmokers each year. Nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke are inhaling many of the same cancer-causing substances and poisons as smokers. Additionally, cigarette butts are also the most littered item in the world, and discarded cigarettes pollute
land and waterways, diminish the beauty of our public spaces and are poisonous to wildlife and children who may ingest them.
“It’s our responsibility to do everything we can to make sure community settings like bus and rail stops are free from secondhand smoke,” said Mark Travers, PhD, Research Scientist at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. “ I applaud the NFTA as a cancer researcher, and I thank them as a parent for their steps to make sure our transportation system is clean and safe for our most vulnerable citizens - including our children and those struggling with lung disease, heart disease, and cancer, all caused by tobacco.”

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) is thanking New York State Senator Tim Kennedy, Chair of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, and Governor Andrew Cuomo for recognizing the significance of public transit services in Western New York. The Executive budget and the NYS Senate One House Bill both call for an increase in state transit operating assistance. In addition, the Senate One House calls for an 18.7 percent increase for NFTA; $6 million for preliminary engineering for the Amherst-Buffalo Metro Rail expansion project; and $100 million for improvements to light rail systems outside of the MTA service area.
"For years, I have fought for more operating funds for the NFTA, as well as the capital funding they need to maintain Metro Rail - the only light rail system outside of the MTA," said Senator Kennedy. "The Senate's proposed budget makes a strong statement as we enter negotiations with the Executive Branch and the Assembly on our final budget. It makes it clear that the Senate Majority is making Upstate and Western New York a top priority. As negotiations move forward, I'll fight to maintain the highest levels of funding possible for our local transportation needs."
The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Executive Director Kim Minkel said "We appreciate Senator Kennedy for recognizing the critical role that Metro bus and rail service has in our community and how important it is in the re-development of the City of Buffalo and Western New York.
