The NFTA Transit Police, Buffalo Airport Fire and Airfield teams have worked tirelessly to help rescue stranded motorists and have provided shelter for roughly 60 people.
Airport officials state there are a number of cars stranded around the area of Genesee Street and Cayuga Road and are asking the public to heed the driving ban.

BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, in collaboration with the WNY Urban Arts Collective, is looking for local artists to create a design that will be showcased on Metro buses for Black History Month.
The theme is “Black Inventors”, and artists are encouraged to be creative and inspiring as this is an opportunity to positively contribute to the daily experience of the many people who utilize the NFTA-Metro services.
The deadline for submissions is Thursday, December 22, 2022, by midnight. Beginning December 27, submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee from the NFTA and the WNY Urban Arts Collective. Artists will be notified of their submission status by January 2, 2022.
The contest is open to any Western New York artist to submit their proposal for consideration. Submitted artwork can be new or existing. Upon selection, artists will be paid a flat fee for their work and completed designs should be sent to local artist, John Baker at presbaker.wny.uac@gmail.com

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) will resume bus service Tuesday morning, November 22. Because of the condition of many local side streets, the agency is asking Paratransit riders to reschedule if possible.
Due to the massive winter storm, and subsequent travel bans, bus and rail service were suspended, a difficult but necessary measure due to safety concerns.
NFTA-Metro operators and the entire team did an amazing job handling the obstacles that come with a snowstorm of this magnitude and helping to restore routes as quickly as possible.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) is preparing for the upcoming inclement weather expected to hit parts of Western New York late Thursday.
Crews at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport held a series of dry runs to ensure all equipment is working properly including five snowblowers, multitask plows that can run all day, and a snow melting trailer that melts 135 tons of snow in an hour.
“While every snow event is different, we are prepared to respond to ensure our operations remain safe while minimizing impacts to the community,” said Tom George, Vice President, Operations, NFTA. “Our award-winning crews at the airports and NFTA-Metro have many years of experience dealing with the challenges of severe weather.”
NFTA-Metro, with its fleet of close to 300 buses and rail system is getting ready for the winter blast as well, and will be communicating any weather related service changes that may occur via social media and on Metro’s website: metro.nfta.com.
BUFFALO, N.Y., - Transit Police officers are doing their part to make this a brighter Halloween for children being treated at Oishei Children’s hospital this year. The officers will hand out Halloween-themed bags to the children with comforting treats featuring a canine paw print blanket. The very popular TAPD K9, Eci, will also be there greeting kids.
“We love to go out in the community to bring joy to children at Oishei,” said NFTA Police Chief Brian Patterson. “Our officers volunteer their time, and it is worth every moment, when they see the smiles, our small gifts bring to these kids.”
The Transit Authority Police Department was established in 1984. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority created the Transit Police Department to protect and serve the traveling public. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is a provider of public transportation for Erie, Niagara, and Genesee counties in New York State. Additionally, the authority functions as a port authority, managing the Buffalo International Airport, and Niagara Falls International Airport. The NFTA operates a bus and rail transit system with origins dating back more than 150 years.
Congratulations to Prentise Moss, named one of 50 Black Achievers in Western New York. Moss has been with the NFTA since 1987, and through hard work and dedication was promoted to his current position of Air Terminal Supervisor in February 2003.
“Prentise is dedicated, hard working, and passionate, he truly takes customer service to a new level,” said Kim Minkel, executive director, NFTA. “Prentise is one of the many airport team members who made it possible for the Buffalo Airport to achieve the J.D. Power award for best customer satisfaction in 2018.”
Prentise is a true professional who’s 35-year commitment to his job is an inspiration, and the NFTA is grateful for his service and proud to have him as part of the organization. Congratulations to all of the honorees.

BUFFALO, N.Y., NFTA-Metro and Amazon have partnered to provide service to the Amazon facility in Lancaster. This partnership, requested by many in our community through feedback both companies received, provides service to the facility from Thruway Mall on the 46 Lancaster route. Passengers can transfer from the 4 Broadway, 6 Sycamore, 22 Porter-Best, and 26 Delavan at the Thruway Mall transfer center. Service is provided seven days a week. On weekdays, there are six trips serving the facility, with five trips serving the facility on the weekends.
“We are excited to be able to provide this enhanced service to our riders,” said Kim Minkel, executive director, NFTA. “NFTA-Metro is working very hard at connecting people to jobs. We know how important this is in the growth and vitality of our community.”

“Limited transportation is a significant hurdle for both businesses trying to attract workers and for individuals of limited means who want to work hard to provide for their families, said Assemblymember Monica Wallace. "That’s why I’m glad to see Amazon and NFTA working together to find solutions that meet the needs of the employees and the employer. This partnership will help folks without private cars get to work and will help Amazon incentivize the workforce it needs to run its business.”
Amazon has designated a specific stop location with its own shelter at its facility. The company is enrolling its employees in NFTA-Metro’s Corporate Pass Program, purchasing at least 25 monthly passes going forward.
BUFFALO, N.Y., Effective immediately, masks are optional for customers and employees at all airports, buses, rail and NFTA facilities. This change comes after the announcement today by Governor Kathy Hochul that the mask mandate on public transportation is no longer in effect.
"We are thankful to all of our customers and employees who helped comply with the mask requirement and helped keep our community safe," said Kim Minkel, executive director, NFTA.
The mask requirement has been in place at the NFTA for the past 2 and a half years.
BUFFALO, N.Y., - The Buffalo Airport Fire Department along with other local first responders will stage a full-scale emergency drill to test the response to a catastrophic incident on airport grounds.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) full scale exercise will take place on Saturday August 27, at 8:30 in the morning until 11:00 a.m. Volunteers will take part in the simulation based on a scenario that there is a diverted aircraft flying from NYC to San Francisco. The aircraft diverts to the Buffalo Airport and lands long and leaves airport property and comes to rest on Genesee Street near Holtz. In this mock exercise there are multiple injuries, fatalities and a significant jet fuel spill on airport property.
This exercise serves as practice for airport fire departments and local agencies that would normally respond to an aircraft incident at the airport. Airport fire fighters, NFTA police and other emergency workers along with airport personnel will simulate the duties they would perform during a real emergency.
“Federal Aviation Administration regulations require a full-scale exercise once every three years to test the airport’s emergency plan,” stated Lee Weitz, director of aviation. “This is an excellent opportunity for us to test and evaluate our rescue skills. Our top priority is the health and safety of both our passengers and staff, and the entire Western New York Community.”
Volunteers will be dressed up with fake injuries and will be safely extricated from the wreckage and carried to waiting ambulances. This event will not impact airport operations.

BUFFALO, N.Y., - Senator Tim Kennedy joined leadership from the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission (MSAAHCC), the East Side Garden Walk (ESGW) and the NFTA on Friday to share renderings of what the future holds for the beautification project of Buffalo’s Freedom Wall. The Freedom Wall, located at the corner of Michigan Avenue and East Ferry Street, is an important and moving mural that celebrates our nation’s historic and ongoing struggles for political and social equality. Never has this symbolic public artwork had more meaning for the Western New York Community in the wake of the tragedy that occurred on May 14, 2022.
Senator Kennedy is to be thanked for obtaining the state funding needed for the project. The improvements, set to start this summer, include:
- Reconstruction of the area between the concrete wall and street curbing
- Installation of LED lighting to accent the wall portraits
- Replacement of worn street curbing and improvement of sidewalk accessibility
“We are so grateful to Senator Kennedy who made this important and meaningful project come to life,” said Kim Minkel, NFTA Executive Director. “Thanks to Senator Kennedy we will have the money needed to improve the curb appeal around the Freedom Wall. This moving public art project has become a major destination in Western New York, and we are proud to be part of the Freedom Wall and all it represents.”
"This enhancement project will ensure that the Freedom Wall is truly illuminated and appreciated in the way it deserves to be. From the very beginning of this process, it was important to us that we were collaborating with groups like the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission and members of the East Side Garden Walk to discuss what these improvements would look like and how they would be incorporated into this powerful piece of art," said Senator Tim Kennedy. "I'm grateful to our community leaders for continuing to have a thoughtful dialogue with the NFTA and my office, and I'm thrilled to celebrate this progress as we celebrate Juneteenth and the people featured in this iconic Buffalo mural."
This public project will cost approximately $734,000, and will begin later this summer with a target completion date of the Fall 2022. This initiative had a considerable amount of community input. A special community panel conducted a survey, held public meetings and provided key data and direction to ensure that the project truly reflects the desires of the community.

BUFFALO, N.Y.- NFTA-Metro, the New York State Office of Parks Recreation & Historic Preservation, and the Erie County Parks Department have partnered to offer free Saturday bus service to connect riders to seven of Western New York’s most popular parks. This special service will start Saturday, June 18, and run through Saturday, August 13.
This initiative was developed as a result of feedback from a 2021 Bus Network Improvement Study indicating a significant number of riders desire direct service to local parks and beaches. Western New York is full of amazing places to enjoy, and this program will provide access to its community gems.
“We are thrilled to offer this innovative new program that our riders requested”, said James Morrell, Director of Public Transit for NFTA-Metro. “Providing access to Western New York’s most beautiful parks and beaches is important for our community and we are happy to make this possible.”
“We are very excited to be partnering with the NFTA and Erie County Parks to provide this opportunity to invite new visitors into our parks. We are keenly aware of some of the barriers related to getting to a few of our more remote parks. We are very happy to be participating in this initiative as we find creative ways to encourage more park visitors. We can’t wait to see everyone in the parks,” said Mark V. Mistretta, NYS Parks Niagara Region Director.
“We, at Erie County Parks, are excited be a part of the launch of the NFTA’s ‘Parks Adventure Bus’,” said Jimbo McDonald, Deputy Commissioner of Recreation. “We look forward to being able to share the natural beauty of many of our Region’s beautiful parks with our neighbors who can now easily take public transportation to these destinations.”
Service will begin on June 18th and every Saturday through August 6th, with a possible make-up day on Saturday, August 13th, departing from the bus station in downtown Buffalo (181 Ellicott Street).

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The NFTA is partnering with Tim Horton’s for the start of its Coffee with a Cop program. The first event will be held on June 2, 2022, at the Tim Horton’s located at 474 Michigan Street in Buffalo (14203).
The goal is to invite casual one-on-one conversations between local community members and NFTA transit police officers. There are no planned speeches or agendas. This is an opportunity for the public to meet their neighborhood police in an informal, comfortable environment to forge bonds and share ideas to help make our community better. During the event, patrons will receive a free small hot coffee courtesy of Tim Hortons.
“Building and maintaining community connection is our goal for the NFTA Transit Police. This program presents a great opportunity for our officers and K-9 teams to engage with residents and forge relationships in a relaxed, friendly setting while working towards a better, safer, and more connected community,” said TAPD Chief Brian Patterson.

Coffee With a Cop is a national initiative that aims to build trust between community members and local police officers, one cup at a time. The key to the program’s success is that it eliminates physical barriers and allows opportunities for relaxed interactions that help law enforcement build better relationships within the communities they serve.

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The NFTA announced its seasonal launch of Metro’s Trolley Service to guests staying at participating Niagara Falls hotels and motels beginning Friday, May 27. Metro’s Niagara Falls Trolley buses will serve Niagara Falls Boulevard, Pine Avenue, the Niagara Falls International Airport and downtown Niagara Falls, USA. More than 8 million people visit Niagara Falls every year, and transportation is vital.
Special Trolley stop signs along the route indicate where riders can board a Metro Trolley. In downtown Niagara Falls, stops include the Aquarium of Niagara Falls, the Seneca Niagara Casino, and across from the Niagara Falls USA Official Visitor Center at First and Rainbow. Service will also be provided to hotels and shops along Third Street, Rainbow Blvd. and Buffalo Avenue. In addition, stops are located along Pine Avenue, at the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, and several motels along Niagara Falls Boulevard and Little Italy.
Patrons receive their free 2022 Trolley day passes upon request at participating hotels and motels. The Trolley pass, supported by the local Niagara Falls bed tax, allows pass holders free access to the Trolley service and the entire Metro Bus and Rail system in Niagara and Erie Counties. Passes must be validated in Niagara County and may be used anytime on the date the pass is punched by the Metro operator.

Operation hours are from 9 a.m. until midnight as follows: May 27-June 12 (Fri-Sun), June 13- Sept. 25 (Daily), and Sept. 30-Oct. 30 (Fri-Sun). Those without a Trolley day pass can ride the Trolley by paying Metro's regular adult fare of $2, $1 for children (5-11 yrs.), seniors (65 yrs. and over), disabled and Medicare clients with valid I.D. All other Metro passes are also valid. Children four and younger ride free, limit three children per fare-paying adult.
