The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority will receive a $102 million grant from the United States Department of Transportation to design and construct a low or no emission Bus Rapid Transit line. The project, which will improve safety, mobility, and connectivity including walkability, bike ability, and enhance affordable transportation along Bailey Avenue in City of Buffalo.
Bailey Avenue runs through Buffalo’s East Side and is nearly the entire length of the eastern edge of the City of Buffalo, cutting through and separating the following neighborhoods: Kensington-Bailey, Kenfield, Schiller Park, Genesee-Moselle, Lovejoy, Kaisertown, Seneca Babcock, and Hopkins-Tifft.
Bailey Avenue currently presents significant barriers to access for the community with high motor vehicle traffic paired with limited provisions for people walking, bicycling, or taking transit in the corridor. Vehicular traffic has come at the expense of the local experience, which suffers from cars speeding by, unmanaged turning, multi-purpose lanes, and a dangerous experience when trying to cross.
Funding will support projects that includes:
- roadway retrofitting (bus lanes, mobility hubs, bike rakes, curbs, sidewalks, accessible curb ramps, crosswalks, etc.);
- purchasing low or no-emission vehicles and related infrastructure; and
- transit—oriented development planning, community outreach and engagement, and an Equity and Inclusion Plan.
East Buffalo has been a focus with a $1 billion transportation investment on the Kensington Expressway – a project that envisions reconnecting the east-west neighborhoods across the depressed section of the Kensington Expressway corridor in East Buffalo, while re-establishing the green space originally provided by Humboldt Parkway, without compromising an important regional transportation link that the Expressway provides.
BUFFALO, N.Y.- With the highly anticipated solar eclipse on the horizon, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) is gearing up to ensure a safe and memorable experience for residents and visitors alike. As part of its commitment to public safety and accessibility, the NFTA has collaborated with local authorities and stakeholders to develop traffic management strategies. Special attention has been given to areas of high foot traffic to ensure efficient flow, while encouraging eclipse watchers to ride public transit to mitigate traffic congestion and enhance the overall viewing experience.
"We are fully dedicated to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all individuals eager to witness this extraordinary event," said James Morrell Director of Public Transportation. " Operationally, we will have all hands-on deck and we aim to provide seamless transportation solutions that enable residents and visitors to experience the solar eclipse with ease and convenience."

BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is pleased to welcome runners, joggers and walkers back to the Niagara Falls International Airport for another year of racing for a cause!
The Niagara Falls International Airport will once again host the Calspan Run the Runway 5K race on its 10,825-foot-long runway and adjoining taxiways Saturday August 26 at 9:00 am.
A special Kids Runway ½ mile take-off will be held from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. for children 12 years & under using a modified course. This year, the Niagara Falls Boys & Girls Club will receive a portion of the net proceeds from the race.
“Everyone at the Niagara Falls Boys & Girls Club is thrilled to Collaborate with the NFTA for the 2023 Run the Runway 5k event,” said Rebecca Vincheski Chief Executive Officer of the Niagara Falls Boys and Girls Club. “Not only will our kids experience a fun and exciting kids run at the airport but the proceeds of the 5k will go directly to supporting the 716 United Basketball program. The 716 United program is critical to the City of Niagara Falls. It doesn’t just provide the ability to learn and train for the sport of basketball. The coach’s ability to teach and develop skills on the court, while focusing on health & life skills, career development and commitment to education off the court provides kids and teens with a program that focuses on the whole child – not just the sport.”
Registration for the race is now open. For pricing and registration information, visit runsignup.com. Free parking will be available in the airport lots and food and beverages will be served during a post-race party . The Niagara Falls International Airport is located at 2035 Niagara Falls Blvd., Niagara Falls, NY.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority will start construction near the 400 block of Main Street and Church Street beginning Thursday July 13.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area as crews are replacing the rail, track bed, and catenary wiring between Church and Mohawk Street. The project will also include the installation of a new double crossover track, which will make future service interruptions less disruptive to passengers, improving safety and overall efficiency.
This construction is a part of the state funded multimillion-dollar project secured by Governor Kathy Hochul and Senator Tim Kennedy to improve the infrastructure of the Metro Rail system.
Future work will include major updates to track beds near Humboldt Hospital Station, and renovations to Church Street Station.
“This is something we’ve had in the plans for years and we’re excited to have reached this next stage,” said James Morrell Director of Public Transit. “Our Delevan Station is a beautiful example of what’s to come and while there’s still a long road of work ahead, we’ve made an enormous amount of progress.”
This process of rail renewal will cause an extended period of single tracking for Metro Rail. Riders can visit https://metro.nfta.com/schedules/single-tracking for scheduling information.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in December.
